Civility returns to the home office

60s_orange_rotary_phone_1

The spring cleaning bug has arrived at my house, and first on the list is an office re-organization. And wouldn’t a lovely vintage phone like this one (from the threepotatofour shop) make my desk look so… civilized? Now if only I could see the desk….

Birds’ Nest Bowls

Here are two easy and sweet spring crafts for making little nests with candy eggs.

martha-stewart-candy-nest

The first, from Martha Stewart, uses double-sided tape to cover the outside of a bowl. Wrap yarn around the bowl, then fill it with the prettiest candy eggs you can find. So simple and cheerful, right? Read the rest of this entry »

A Little Birdie Told Me

…that your feathered friends in the neighborhood are hoping for a new feeder this spring, filled to the top with yummy seed.

In fact, they have some suggestions for you. Click on the images for more info.

How are these, for starters? Awesome, right? By red yellow and blue ink:

kitchen inspirations

kitchen-dining-march-2009-14

kitchen-dining-march-2009-21

This is our kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is somewhat newer and, while not my taste, it is respectable…but the place has some basic flow problems that make it a source of constant frustration and which cause us to go visiting open houses every weekend, in search of the perfect open family friendly space. We love our neighborhood, but we don’t love the railroad car feel of the space… People are always sitting on the kitchen floor.
So recently we’ve been thinking about fixing the layout of our kitchen – removing the rest of that dividing wall and making a more open space with a bar height counter and shelving underneath. I’d also like to paint the cabinets white and change the back door to increase the light.

Summer Lovin’

This past weekend, we ate a little picnic on our deck and then tackled some yard work. We are fortunate to have quite a big back yard, and I’ve been dreaming of warm days when we can have dinner outside, work in the garden, play in the sprinkler, add some fish to our little pond, bring new birds to our yard, and make our outdoor space extra pretty this year.

Here are some of my outdoor inspirations:

Country living

foster-kitchen1

As an urban family, we often fantasize about having a little country cabin we could escape to each weekend, where we could read, craft, play games by a fire, garden…just escape!
Obviously, we aren’t the only ones…the fabulous men of our favorite local business, Foster’s Urban Homeware, have gotten to indulge their country house fantasies to the fullest, and it is really incredible. I just love their use of color, the way in which they embraced the old character of the home while making it feel modern and fresh.

Creative Party Favors

midnight-snack-favors

This idea rocks! A bottle carrier that you decorate any way you like, fill with milk and cookies, or perhaps soda and snacks, and give as party favors. Awesome. I love it, and I hope you do too, because if you’re related to me or count me as a friend, you are probably going to get one of these from me.

You can find the bottle carriers and labels at My Own Labels.

Spotted on Hostess with the Mostess.

If you make your own version of this, email me a picture!
