Tiny Living

tiny-living

This morning I saw a post on Apartment Therapy about the Tiny Living shop in New York City, which sells space-saving products for people who live in small spaces. I don’t even live in a particularly small space, but there’s something about the idea of living efficiently that really appeals to me. The first post I wrote for this blog was about living in a “Tiny House” and of course I’ve just written about having a small cabana as a space of my own.

I wouldn’t say I have a lot of hobbies or passions, but industrial design is exciting and fascinating to me. I seek it out at modern art museums. And I am particularly excited about design that strives to be efficient and multi-functional.  I think it appeals to my girlish delight for secret hiding spaces (for items that can be folded or hidden away in some clever way). It also appeals to my talent (as a mom, but also professionally) as a multi-tasker; I like it when products kill two birds with one stone. And I like the idea that if I am living in a small space, everything I own has a purpose and a use.

I’m very practical that way, although I have more useless clutter in my house than I care to admit.

So the idea of living in a small space (in theory!), where all the items are carefully chosen for their usefulness (which also must be beautiful, of course), is something I like to think about.

I haven’t figured out how to parlay my interest in industrial design into a career path yet, though.

i love beautiful but practical, smart products. and i love all things tiny. put ‘em together and you’ve got tiny living.

TL is one of my favorite shops. i just love the concept and i love the products they sell. when i was there in november ‘08, i bought a spork that was stainless steel. (i collect mini spoons, sporks, paddles and such so this was a true delight for me.) tiny living is also the first place i spotted mini sharpies which i can’t live without!
